What is Botox and What is it Used for in Dentistry?

Botox is an intramuscular medication that reduces muscle contraction. Botox treatment is successfully used in dentistry for patients with overdeveloped chewing muscles, those with teeth-clenching and grinding habits, and those with related jaw joint problems.

What is the Effect of Botox Treatment?

Botox treatment begins to show its maximum effect approximately two weeks after application and gradually diminishes over time. The full effect lasts approximately four to six months, varying from patient to patient. After the effect subsides, two, three, or more treatment sessions may be necessary.

Does Botox Treatment Take Long and Is It Painful?

Applying Botox treatment to the masticatory muscles requires a session of approximately 5-10 minutes and is a fairly painless procedure.

Are There Any Precautions to Follow After Botox Treatment?

We recommend the following to patients who receive Botox treatment:

  • Do not wash your face with hot water or take a shower for at least 24 hours.

  • Avoid pressure on the treatment area and do not massage the area for at least 24 hours.

  • Sleep with your head slightly upright with two pillows for at least 24 hours.

  • Do not apply any cream or makeup to your face for at least 24 hours.
